Affordable Support in Budapest. Low-Cost, Non-Clinical Conversations.
If you have been searching for affordable therapy in Budapest, cheap counselling or low-cost mental health support in Hungary, you have probably already noticed that the prices can be difficult to stomach. Traditional therapy in Budapest typically can have a high cost per session. For students, expats, freelancers, parents or anyone between jobs, that is simply out of reach.
This page is for you.
I want to be upfront before anything else. I am not a licensed therapist. I do not offer clinical treatment, diagnosis or medical services. What I offer are supportive conversations. Affordable, confidential and human. If you are looking for a space to talk, reflect and feel heard without breaking the bank, you are in the right place.
Sessions at Idun Counselling are as low as 5,000 HUF, roughly €15. That is the standard rate with a short feedback form completed within 12 hours of your session. Without the feedback discount sessions are 6,000 HUF. The Idun’s Chosen Program reserves at least one spot for anyone who genuinely cannot afford to pay right now.
There are no hidden fees, no surprise charges and no packages to commit to. You pay per session and can cancel anytime with 24 hours notice.
Licensed therapy costs more for entirely valid reasons. Therapists complete years of education at master’s or doctoral level, undergo extensive supervised clinical training, pay licensing and insurance fees and often operate from a clinic with significant overhead. All of that is necessary for clinical care and it is reflected in the price.
But not everyone needs clinical care. A lot of people simply need someone to talk to. That is the gap Idun Counselling is trying to fill.
This space is a good fit if you are not in crisis but something feels off. If you are going through a life transition such as a move, a breakup or a career change. If you feel lonely, stuck or overwhelmed. If you are an expat or international in Budapest who needs English speaking support. If you want a regular, confidential space to think things through and you cannot afford traditional therapy right now.
This is not the right fit if you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, self-harm, severe depression, trauma or PTSD, or if you need a formal diagnosis, medication or crisis intervention. If any of that applies to you, please reach out to a licensed professional. I have listed some affordable options in Budapest further down this page.
Sessions are 45 minutes. You can choose between online via Zoom, Teams or Google Meet, outdoors in a central Budapest park such as Városliget or Margaret Island, or as a home visit within central Budapest after a few prior sessions.
Keeping prices low is a deliberate choice, not a reflection of what you will experience in a session. You still get full confidentiality, flexible scheduling including evenings and weekends, a warm and non-judgmental space and someone who is genuinely trained and invested in your wellbeing. I am currently completing my BA in Psychology and have been accepted onto an MA in Psychotherapy, through which I will work towards my official licence as a psychotherapist.
What you do not get is diagnosis, treatment plans or clinical care. But if what you need is an honest human conversation, you do not always need those things to feel better.
If 5,000 HUF is still too much right now, the Idun’s Chosen Program exists for exactly that reason. At least one spot is always reserved for someone who needs support but cannot afford the standard rate. No proof of income required and no awkward forms. Just an honest conversation. You can find out more and apply on the Idun’s Chosen page.
Every new client begins with a free 15 minute introduction call. It is relaxed, online and completely no obligation. We talk about what is bringing you to seek support, I am clear about what I can and cannot offer, and we decide together whether to book a first session. If sliding scale or Idun’s Chosen is relevant we can discuss that too.
Is this therapy? No. I am not a licensed psychotherapist and I do not provide clinical treatment or diagnosis. I offer supportive conversations for people who need a space to talk.
Why is it so much cheaper than therapy? Because I do not provide clinical services and I keep my overhead deliberately low. Accessibility is the whole point.
Can I use insurance? No. I am not a licensed provider so sessions are not covered by insurance.
What if I cannot afford even 5,000 HUF? Reach out anyway. Mention your situation during the intro call and we will figure something out.
Is this legitimate? Yes. I am a real person, transparent about my training and clear about what I am and am not qualified to offer. I will never claim to be something I am not.
